Telecommunications in Switzerland

Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a federal republic in Europe. The country  is bordered by Italy to the south, France to the west, Germany to the north, and Austria and Liechtenstein to the east.

According to latest ITU data (June 2018) mobile coverage reaches 100% of the population, and 4G LTE accessible by 99% of Swiss.

The country has a well-developed telecommunication market with high penetration rates for fixed and mobile services. NGA networks are widely available and fixed-broadband penetration is among the highest in the world.

Switzerland is one of the leading countries in ICT development. The Government is determined to utilize the opportunities provided by ICTs to make Switzerland an “attractive place to live and as an innovative, future-oriented location for business and research”.

Mobile Network Operators

Salt is one of three national mobile network operators in Switzerland. Formerly known as Orange, the company's history dates back to its founding in January 1998. Salt Mobile SA was formerly known as Orange Communications SA and changed its name to Salt Mobile in April 2015. The company was acquired by billionaire Xavier Niel's investment vehicle NJJ Holdings in February 2015.

Sunrise is the second largest mobile network operator providing telecommunication services in Switzerland. The company was founded in 2000. With ownership previously held by TDC Group, the company became privately held by CVC Capital Partners up until CVC's IPO in 2015. Sunrise Communications Group AG is now publicly traded on the Swiss Exchange.
