Personal Argentina is a mobile phone service operated by Telecom Argentina S.A., a major local telephone company in the northern part of Argentina. The company, initially known as Sociedad Licenciataria Norte S.A., began its operations following the privatisation of Argentina's state-owned utilities in 1990. Telecom Argentina was given the "upper half" of the country, from the middle to the north, while Telefónica was given the southern part. Each company was granted an initial 7-year monopoly starting on November 8, 1990. The ownership of Telecom Argentina has seen changes over the years. The original stakeholders, Stet International (the previous name of Telecom Italia) and France Télécom, later sold their part of the company to the Argentine Werthein Group. In 2017, Telecom Argentina merged with Clarín Group's Cablevisión, becoming the largest mass media enterprise in Argentina. The merger, which saw the company expand into internet access and mobile telephony, was approved by the Government of Argentina in June 2018.
